I’ll tell you what: If John McCain says “My friends” one more time, he won’t have any friends left. But then, there he was at the debate trying to gain popularity by taking the UNpopular position on the immigration legislation that is such a bugaboo to most of his fellow Republicans.

And he’s not the only one. For so many in his party, Rudy Giuliani’s abortion stand is such heresy that when he talked about it last night he was stopped by thunder.

In fact, two of the three GOP leaders have set themselves out as mavericks. As for the third, Mitt Romney — well, who knows where he stands? What day is this?

Among the most intriguing on the lower tier are Tom Tancredo (I mean, forget about Iran, would he consider using tactical nuclear weapons against illegal immigrants?) and Mike Huckabee. Huckabee is kind of appealing. But get real: I mean, could a former governor of a small state like Arkansas, who struggles with his weight, become president? Naaaahhhhhh. Never happen.

But what the Republican debate really showed was the importance of those who didn’t show. Fred Thompson continues to campaign from a lounge chair, fielding puffball questions on the Fox News Channel.

And of course, there’s that other guy — George W.Bush. He’s a Republican. Remember? But it looked like we were watchng “42nd Street,” what with all the tap dancing away from Bush by the candidates. But given his poll numbers, they can probably be pardoned for that.

Did I say “PARDONED”?!!. Yes, the GOP candidates have their work cut out for them.
