Twisted Promises (Bob Franken)
@ 11:25 am

It’s always interesting to observe the worlds of politics and government. Like fantasy and reality, they are intertwined. The boundless promises of a campaign for change in government get tangled in the politics of it.

“It’s time for a change,” said the Democrats. And the voters bought it. Congress changed hands as poll after poll showed a majority looking for a way out of Iraq and the Republican way of doing national security.

So what happens? Again, the pack that now controls both the House and Senate left is looking like it’s all bark and no bite. The Democrats left town whimpering with their tails between their legs.

Preseason Games (Bob Franken)

First, let’s declare the obvious winner in Sunday’s Iowa debate. That was Barack Obama, without a doubt. Each Republican’s put-down, of course, elevated him with Democrats. But what about the GOP candidates?

Sam Brownback definitely scored some points. When we talk about the GOP base, we always include the anti-abortion movement. So with the very first question, Brownback was given the chance to show off his long-standing “pro-life” commitment, and he took full advantage, leaving Mitt Romney, a more recent convert, to sputter about “people that are holier than thou —”

The polls show Romney is ahead of the others in all-important Iowa. But big deal. The real leader among Republicans surveyed seems to be None of the Above. Not only that, but the GOP is not even playing with a full deck in the state.

Sharing the Ridiculous Wealth (Bob Franken)

Help me understand why someone, anyone, should be allowed to get paid several hundred million dollars in any year and keep it.

What would be wrong with a confiscatory tax rate, maybe 90 percent on personal income that exceeds, say, 10 million dollars annually?

Is this class warfare? You bet it is. But isn’t hoarding such massive fortunes and keeping the money away from the millions of people struggling to subsist also class warfare?

Yeasayers, Naysayers (Bob Franken)
@ 11:46 am

There is one White House unit, at least, that is top-notch. The crackerjack quick-response team acted with lightning speed to flood our BlackBerrys with a mass e-mail this week. They made damned sure we knew that two think-tankers were, uh, thinking that the situation in Iraq had become a bit less dire. It was reminiscent of a country music lyric: “I’ve been down so much, down seems like up to me.”

And when an ABC correspondent reported from Baghdad that they just might be correct — ZAPPO!! We were treated to another electronic dump with that information.

But I’m still waiting for another one.

Political Sex (Bob Franken)
@ 10:40 am

For the longest time I thought that misogynists were people who gave rubdowns. But now that I’ve got me an education, I know what they really are and where to find them: stomping around the world of politics.

Why else, in this day and age, would it be acceptable to refer to Jeri Thompson as Fred’s “trophy wife”? I mean, is Bill Clinton often called Hillary’s trophy HUSBAND? I don’t think so.

And how else can we explain all the attention that was paid to the neckline of the senator from New York (I’m not talking about Chuck Schumer, although I have no doubt he’d show his cleavage if it would get him on TV)?
